Sydney Adventist Hospital

For over 117 years Sydney Adventist Hospital has been a leader in healthcare for our community.

Sydney Adventist Hospital (SAH) – fondly referred to as ‘the San’, is operated by Adventist HealthCare Limited. Adventist HealthCare is a Christian health care provider owned by the Seventh-day Adventist Church, operating several businesses including Sydney Adventist Hospital, San Day Surgery Hornsby, San Radiology & Nuclear MedicineSydney Adventist Hospital Pharmacy and ELIA Wellness. As a not-for-profit organisation our purpose is to benefit our community – not shareholders, with all proceeds reinvested back into services & facilities ensuring we provide the best possible care.

For over 117 years, the San has been a leading healthcare provider. We started leading health & wellbeing when we first opened our doors back in 1903 as the ‘Sydney Sanitarium’. We led the way in maternity care, not just helping women give birth but helping them become mothers. We led the way with ground-breaking heart services in the 1970s and we led the way with the first private 24/7 emergency care department on Sydney’s North Shore in the 1990’s.

We are a leader in providing wholistic care for those with cancer, and at the forefront of robotic, complex cardiac and minimally invasive surgery, with state-of-the-art equipment and remarkable doctors on our team. In 2020, we were the first private hospital in Australia to offer a maternity package for mums with no out of pocket costs*, and awarded the Australian Private Hospital Association Award for Excellence – for our innovative Community Palliative Care Program.

Most importantly, over all these years what we’ve really been known for is our leadership in providing remarkable care – care delivered by trusted teams of experts working together in an environment where only remarkable is good enough.

Since first opening in 1903 as a small 70 bed facility, ‘the San’ is now NSW’s largest private hospital with over 700 beds, including 523 licensed overnight beds. It is the largest private hospital in NSW, and the largest single employer in the Ku-ring-gai Council area. Over 2,300 staff, 500 volunteers and 1,000 accredited medical practitioners care for more than 64,000 inpatients and 126,000 outpatients annually with approximately 1,700 babies delivered each year. Our 24/7 Emergency Care treats approximately 18,000 patients each year making it NSW’s largest and busiest private Emergency Department.

The hospital provides comprehensive acute surgical, medical and obstetric care including complex cardiac procedures, robotics and minimally invasive surgery. Services and facilities include 23 operating theatre and endoscopy suites, 3 cardiac catheterisation laboratories, intensive care and coronary care units, renal dialysis unit, rehabilitation and sleep studies units, a leading multi-disciplinary Integrated Cancer Centre, and an extensive range of diagnostic, allied health and support services. Dedicated to being at the forefront of technology, the San has an advanced robotic surgery unit, state-of-the-art hybrid operating theatre, and the latest in surgical and diagnostic imaging.

Outpatient services at the San include physiotherapy, radiology, ultrasound services for women, fertility services, pathology, radiation oncology, nuclear medicine, wound care clinic and an on-site family medical and dental centre. Support services available on the campus include Cardiac Rehabilitation, San Cancer Support, and Jacaranda Lodge which offers low-cost accommodation for outpatients and their families.

Specialist consulting suites on site include the San Clinic, San Clinic Tulloch, the San Integrated Cancer Centre, Fox Valley Medical & Dental Centre, and the new Parkway San Clinic located opposite the hospital on the corner of Fox Valley Road and the Comenarra Parkway.

The San has a unique commitment to health workforce education. The hospital is an education hub with a purpose built clinical education centre on site training medical, nursing and allied health students. The centre houses Avondale College’s Faculty of Nursing and Health – one of the oldest continuing nursing schools in Australia. Research facilities onsite include the Australasian Research Institute and the San Clinical Trials Unit.
